  • Diamond - Birthstone for April

posted on 8 April 2011 | posted in Birthstones

"She who from April dates her years,
Diamonds shall wear, lest bitter tears
    For vain repentance flow."

Diamond is the birthstone for april and considered the ultimate gemstone it has very few weaknesses and many strengths. The word "diamond" comes from the Greek word "adamastos," which means "invincible." It is well known that Diamond is the hardest substance found in nature and is four times harder than sapphire and ruby. Diamonds may be nearly any colour in the rainbow including browns, grays, whites and yellow these are most common followed by colorless but they can also be found in blue, black, reddish and greenish.

April's birthstone is remarkably simple in composition, yet stunning in its unique ability to reflect and refract light into vivid flashes of brilliant color. The ancient Hindus called the Diamond "Vajra," meaning lightening, both because of the sparks of light thrown off by this gem as well as its invincible strength.

Diamonds have been revered throughout history and was once an adornment possessed only by kings, this beautiful gem is surrounded by romance, mystery, and passion. Used to embellish such items as crowns, swords and emblems as well as jewellery. Queen Victoria declared the celebration of her 50th year of reign a "Diamond Jubilee." Diamonds have also been credited for having certain medicinal properties.
