  • Ruby - Birthstone for July

posted on 5 July 2011 | posted in Birthstones

    "The gleaming Ruby should adorn,
All those who in July are born,
For thus they'll be exempt and free,
    From lover's doubts and anxiety."

Ruby is the birthstone for July and it is also the 40th wedding anniversary stone. The Ruby's rich color symbolises love, passion, heat and power for the wearer. Called the "Rajnapura" or King of Gems by ancient Hindus, the ruby is among the most highly prized of gems throughout history. The Ruby was thought to have magical powers and it was worn by royalty as a talisman against evil. It was thought to grow darker when peril was imminent and to return to its original color once danger was past but only if it was in the hands of its rightful owner. It has also been said that the Ruby's red glow comes from an internal flame that cannot be extinguished making a gift of this stone symbolic of everlasting love.

Ruby is a red variety of the mineral corundum, it has always been considered one of the most valuable gemstones and makes beautiful jewellery set in silver or gold as pendants, rings, bracelets and brooches. The colour of ruby can vary from pink-red to deep red. The word 'ruby" is taken from Latin 'rubens', which is translated as 'red'. It is the second hardest natural mineral known to mankind, the most beautiful crystals are thought to be from Burma, but quality Rubies are also found in India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Kenya, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the United States.

We offer a wide range of Silver Jewellery set with ruby in a variety of styles and settings.
