Silver Love Spoonsposted on 23June2011 | posted in Love Spoons |( 0 ) CommentsThe custom of carving and giving Welsh Lovespoons originated in Wales hundreds of years ago. Giving gifts of handcrafted spoons to symbolise affection and love is a tradition which has it's roots in the 17th century with the oldest surviving example of a love spoon dating back to 1667. The love spoon was a gift of love or affection and the young man would spend hours carving the spoon with his own hands in the hope that the girl would accept it. If the girl accepted the spoon she would show that she was interested in him and they would begin a relationship, this is also the origin of the word 'spooning'. Love Spoons are not only the gift of young men commencing with a relationship but are also used for many other occasions from engagements to weddings, anniversaries to birthdays, friendship or valentine, christenings and even farewell or parting gifts and Christmas presents, in fact any occasion when someone wants to show that they care or love someone. Love spoons are symbolic and have several meanings. To begin with the spoon itself suggests that the man will help the girl by providing food for which they were originally designed. Later they became more ornamental with long handles and they would be hung on the wall. Designs on love spoons are also symbolic and all have different meanings for instance a heart means my heart is yours. Lovespoons with cages indicate that the carver would like children and the number he desired would be indicated by the number of spheres. A horse shoe is the symbol of good luck and a cross is a wish for God to bless their relationship. Double spoons indicate togetherness and a key is for security or the key to my heart. Knot work means eternal love or together forever or everlasting love.
